Latest Preview On Premier League Relegation Candidates

The contest to stay in the Premier League can often be just as exciting as the fight at the top to win the league and this year looks no different. We have a group of teams that could be relegated, including those that have just arrived in the Premier League and those that have been in the league for a long time. Here is our guide to the Premier League relegation candidates for the 2017/18 season.

The three teams that were promoted to the Premier League, Newcastle, Huddersfield, and Brighton all need to work incredibly hard to avoid being sent straight back down to the Championship. Out of those three, Newcastle look to be in the best position to stay up, and they will call on all of their previous Premier League experience to make that happen.

Newcastle will be able to call on experienced boss Rafa Benitez, a man who knows everything there is to know about the Premier League. With many of his team also having Premier League experience, and the confidence their dominant Championship campaign will have brought, they look to have the best chance of survival out of the newcomers.

Both Huddersfield and Brighton arrive in the Premier League with a daunting task ahead of them. Both overachieved last season and will need to repeat that if they are to stay clear of the relegation zone this season. They have spent well, but unless further investment comes before the transfer window shuts, I can see them struggling right from the start.

Looking at the rest of the league, Burnley only stayed in the top flight last season thanks to a great home record. Without major investment this summer, they need to find a way to win away from home this season, because I don’t think they are capable of replicating their fantastic home run of last season. Burnley has the knowledge and experience, but do they have the quality to stay in the Premier League for a second season?

Should Swansea lose Gylfi Sigurdsson, then they could find themselves in a lot of trouble this season. With few additions made this summer to a squad that was in a lot of trouble in January, and with the potential loss of their star man on the horizon, Swansea could start the season in a big hole. They yielded a lot of goals last season, nearly two per game and they have done nothing to prevent that, with no senior defenders arriving at the club and that could be a huge mistake.

The final team to mention as a potential relegation candidate is Crystal Palace. They have only made one signing so far, failing to add to a team that on the whole was pretty disappointing last season. With new manager Frank De Boer making his presence known, it's difficult to deny that he wants to bring in a particular style of play, but so far no new players are game to take on it.

The club faces a battle between the players of last season and a manager who wants to play attractive football. That battle may lead them to start slowly, and if it drags on, they could find themselves in the relegation places.
